Marvellous Maths

This past fortnight in Maths we have been focusing on the topics of Whole Number and 2D Space.

We have been practicing counting backwards and forwards to 100 and counting by different numbers such as twos, fives and tens and then even extending these skills into counting by 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s, which is very tricky indeed!

In Maths we do focus lessons on concepts altogether as a class and then usually play a game together on the interactive whiteboard based on the focus concept for that day then we spend some time completing Daily 3 Maths which comprises Maths by Myself, Maths with Someone and Maths in Writing. We complete written worksheets and activities to support and record our learning and use lots and lots of hands-on concrete materials to assist our mathematical thinking and to being out different discussion points and ways of problem solving.

Like Daily 5 in English, Daily 3 Maths allows us some choice and ownership in our learning as we get to choose which activities we would like to complete after completing our whole class instruction time, hands-on topic practice and written work. We try and incorporate lots off and varied options such as Maths apps on the iPads, Dominos addition, making sums using magnetic numbers and operations, Uno place value number war, making patterns and 2D shapes with the mini barrel beads, completing missing numbers in hundreds charts and writing out our counting and numbers using different surfaces just to name a few.

Here's some photos of us completing some Maths activities of our choice...

Using Maths apps on the iPads...

Adding Domino numbers...

Making sums using magnetic numbers and different orders of operations on the mini whiteboards...

Playing Uno Place Value Attack game...

Making shapes and patterns using the mini barrel beads...

Using different 2D shapes such as squares, rectangles and triangles to make pictures using the mini barrel beads...

Filling in the missing digits in hundreds charts...

Practicing counting numbers and recording them on the mini chalkboards...

We have been completing some different games and activities online using the interactive whiteboard in our whole class instructional times. Many of these can be found on our Learning Links page on the blog.

Here's one we tried where we had to identify the correct shape based on the description. It also helped us revise 2D shapes, 3D shapes, fractions of shapes and how shapes can flip, slide and turn...

Here's a link to the game...

Keep up the fantastic effort you marvellous 2G mathematicians! You're awesome!
